Our focus is on primary areas designed to foster connection and preserve local culture and history in the Tampa Bay region:

  • Literacy and Learning: The organization promotes literacy among children through programs at schools, story hours, and free book giveaways. These programs are designed to help young learners grow as readers and speakers while building their confidence.
  • Senior Voices and Oral History: Suncoast Storytellers empowers seniors to share and record their life stories through weekly oral history workshops, story circles, and monthly open-mic sessions. These initiatives aim to preserve personal and community memories while reducing social isolation for elders.
  • Storyteller Development and Social Connection: The guild works to develop a network of skilled storytellers by providing coaching and performance stages for both new and experienced tellers. This development supports their broader goal of using storytelling to address social needs, such as environmental awareness and intergenerational connections.
  • Watershed Stories turns complex environmental data into personal narratives, making ecological issues relatable. By blending science with local folklore and history, the program fosters a deep emotional connection to Florida’s landscapes. This encourages environmental stewardship, bridges the gap between residents and researchers, and creates a shared community identity centered on protecting vital natural resources for future generations.
